OUR COMMUNITY
The Perth and District Community Foundation serves the town of Perth, and the townships of Drummond North Elmsley, Tay Valley, and Lanark Highlands. (See map.)
Perth, which was founded in 1816, is a small town (population 6,000) which prides itself on its historical ambiance. The main streets are lined with 150 year old stone buildings. At its heart is Stewart Park, home to the annual Stewart Park Festival. Town life is vibrant with a myriad of sporting events, theatrical productions and several annual festivals. Manufacturing concerns include 3M, Cutler-Hammer, and Albany International
Lanark Highlands, (population 4,629) with its1065 sq. km. of rolling hills is home to a thriving maple syrup industry. Lanark Village, bisected by the Clyde River, boasts a number of beautiful stone buildings. Several small hamlets, including Middleville and Hopetown, dot the rugged landscape.
Drummond/North Elmsley, (population 6,203) is a largely rural community spread over 242 sq,. km. Bordered by the Rideau River, it supports numerous farms and offers a seasonal escape to hundreds of cottagers. The township includes the hamlets of Port Elmsley and Rideau Ferry.
Tay Valley Township, to the west of Perth, is 554 sq. km. and has a population of 5,170. It includes the hamlets of Glen Tay, Wemyss, Fallbrook and Maberly. With its lakes, woodlands and marshes it offers prime recreational opportunities. Within its borders are Murphys Point Provincial Park and OMYA, a large calcium carbonate processing plant.
