Becoming a Trauma-Responsive Community

September 8th, 2026|News and Events|

Life can be difficult and bad things happen.

At our best, community comes together to understand and support each other in times of trauma. But without an understanding of trauma, communities risk responding to challenges and pain with punishment, exclusion, or further harm instead of restoratively.

Lanark County Community Justice and the Perth & District Community Foundation invite you to join us for a learning opportunity to strengthen the knowledge, skills and attitudes we need to be stronger together.

When Harm Occurs: Becoming a Trauma-Responsive Community

A presentation by lawyer, speaker and educator Myrna McCallum

Myna McCallum is an educator, movement-builder, and the host of The Trauma-Informed Lawyer podcast. Her work is reshaping how the legal profession thinks about justice, humanity and responsibility.

This event recognizes that trauma impacts how people think, feel, behave, and respond — sometimes in ways that may appear confusing, disruptive, or challenging to others. Myrna will help participants:

  • Better understand how trauma affects human behaviour and responses
  • Recognize that people may not always respond “well” when they are hurting
  • Avoid responding to poor behaviour with poor behaviour
  • Reduce and mitigate harm to those impacted by trauma, whether from recent events or experiences long past
  • Strengthen community responses that promote safety, dignity, accountability, and healing

Becoming a trauma‑responsive community benefits everyone. It supports healthier relationships, stronger communities, and more humane and effective approaches to justice.
